Betty Lowry originated this recipe in the family but we found the recipe written up as a paper Shalon presumably had to write for a class in school. I enjoyed it so much, it is included it as the recipe itself. The instructor had written “good” beside the second to last sentence in red ink. As the recipe is embedded in the prose, I highlighted it in yellow to make it easier to prepare.

In order for a Gouee (sic) cake to be made with ease, all materials are gathered beforehand. Two mixing bowls, a spoon, and a 13x9x2 cake pan are the utensils used. Ingredients of this cake include a yellow cake mix, one cup of pecans, three eggs, a stick of butter, one twelve ounce package of cream cheese, and a box of confectioners sugar. With all materials at hand the steps to a tasty dessert begin. Step one involves make the bottom layer. The yellow cake mix is combined in one bowl along with one egg, the butter and pecans. This makes crumbly dough and is pressed in the bottom of the pan. The icing is created in step two. Involved are the rest of the ingredients: confectioners sugar, eggs, and cream cheese. These are brought together in the other bowl and stirred until a smooth, syrupy consistency is obtained. This is evenly spread over step one. A 350º F. oven for 35-40 minutesis the final step before a delicious cake is produced. Serving suggestions include a hot cup of coffee and an old friend. Gouee (sic) cake is a speciality that indeed causes the mouth to water.
