Maw Maw Lowry always had huge Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter meals for the whole family. Some dishes just had to be there and this is one of them. Alex, especially, makes sure Monkey Bread is on the table!

Thanksgiving at Howard and Edna’s house in Birmingham in the early 1980’s.

2 packages yeast

1 cup warm water

1 cup shortening

¾ cup sugar

1 ½ teaspoon salt

1 cup boiling water

2 beaten eggs

6 cups plain flour

2 sticks melted butter

In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside. In another bowl, mix shortening, sugar, and salt. Add boiling water and mix until the shortening melts. Add eggs and stir.

Add flour and yeast alternately to the shortening mixture beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Let rise in a covered grease bowl until it doubles in size. Punch down.

Roll on floured surface ¼” to ½” thick and cut into various shapes. Dip shapes into melted butter one at a time.

Layer into 2 loaf pans until each is ½ full. Let rise to the top of the pan.

Bake at 350º F. for 45 minutes.
