This is Grandmother’s renowned recipe. We’ve seen a few thousand heads of cabbage shredded in our lifetime because of this one. It was present at every holiday meal and many a meal throughout the year. Always asked for, always expected, always loved. Even the kids loved it.

Grandmother writes:

“The ingredients cannot be measured by quantity because you never get the same size head of cabbage or the same size carrots every time.

1 head of cabbage (any size)

1 or 2 carrots (any size)

Salt and pepper

Sugar

Kraft’s Miracle Whip Salad Dressing

Vinegar off of sweet pickles

The cabbage and carrots are shredded rather fine.  Add vinegar, sugar, and pepper. When adding the salt, remember the dressing has some salt in it. The vinegar must be off of sweet pickles (the spices in the pickles DO make a difference). I use Kraft’s Miracle Whip because other dressings have never given me the taste I want. One other thing—it has always been good to have a child or grandchild to give the final taste test. It has never failed. I’ve used this recipe for picnics, neighborhood gatherings, church socials and even teas. It never, never fails when you follow the directions.”
