Grandmother made her bulldog much browner than Pa did. Either way, it is great over biscuits or just plain light bread!

Bacon grease to cover the bottom of the skillet (about 4 tablespoons)
1 cup milk
1 cup water
½ cup all purpose flour (Pa: 3 heaping tablespoons)
Salt and pepper to taste
Melt bacon grease and mix the flour in, stirring constantly until it is almost burning. Combine the milk and water and add gradually to the skillet. Stir until thick and season to taste. If it thickens too fast, add a little more water.
