More than the food, we remember sitting at Mom Hitch’s table at the farm watching her knead the dough, whisk eggs, sprinkle sugar and slice butter onto the dough—butter we had helped churn. Then, we watched her skillfully mold it into a large butterball with a wooden spatula squeezing every speck of buttermilk out.

Biscuit Dough (see Aunt Lorena’s Biscuits)

Roll dough thin and break small pieces of butter on top. Sprinkle sugar. Roll the dough into a cylinder and slice. Turn them on their sides and place in a greased pan. Bake at 400ºF. until golden brown.
